Key to Measurement Curriculum Review

Key to Measurement Curriculum Review

Our Experience

Key to Measurement  was a wonderful experience. The curriculum is laid out in 4 books beginning with simple real life measurement exercises and ending with more complex measurements such as capacity, temperature, and time. We found the books easy to use. KTM allowed my son to work at his own pace and rewarded his success. Difficult concepts were made easy with simple, easy to understand explanations and sample problems. More importantly, he retained the knowledge gained using these books and was able to apply it to more difficult math concepts later on.

The Facts

Book 1 English Units of Length

Book 1 covers all of the standard or English units of length.  Some of the exercises involve measuring items in the home or classroom while others concentrate on a student’s ability to convert units.

Book 2  Measuring Length and PerimeterUsing  English Units

Book 2 begins with changing from one length of measurement to another. This book covers the various forms of measuring length such as perimeter, circumference, floorplans, scaling, and using fractions with measurement. The tools of measurement are also covered.

Book 3  Finding Area and Volume using English Units

Book 3 covers both area and volume.  There are several projects where students are asked to estimate and measure both area and volume of real objects. To better understand exactly how area works, students use dot grids.  As well, the concepts of surface area, comparing area, and matching volumes are presented.

Book 4 English Units for Weight, Capacity, Temperature, and Time

Book 4 opens with the comparison of weights and moves on to changing units of weight. Students examine fractions of weight by solving story problems about recipes. Next, students learn about temperature and are asked to solve different types of temperature problems.  The book then moves to time where estimating time, time zones, and working backward are practiced.

The Key to Measurement provides self-paced, self-guided workbooks. It motivates students and builds their confidence with bite-size, easy to follow lesson. This curriculum allows customization for individual learners. Each book concludes with a cumulative test on the concepts presented.  The test in the fourth book incorporates concepts from the first three books in addition to the material presented in the fourth book.
